People often ask ‘where can I get great backgrounds for my Mac desktop?’ – and there’s no shortage of answers to that question. Firstly, you can take your own using your phone these days. Then copy them into a folder and using the Settings app you can get your Mac to cycle through them randomly, changing them every 5 minutes, or every half hour or pretty much any timespan you like. But the quality of shot on a phone isn’t great, and the content is limited to places you’ve been. It’s nice, but it’s not necessarily all that fancy.
You can go to Google and search for royalty free images and download those onto your computer and put them in the right folder, doing the same as mentioned above.
Or you can grab an application that does this sort of thing for you. Which is where MacPaw Wallpaper Wizard comes in. It has a free trial to see if you like it and it’s relatively cheap at $6.95 if you decide to buy it. So why would you bother?
Well, to be fair, it’s probably not something I’d spend my money on, but that’s largely down to the fact that my MacBook rarely has the desktop showing anyway – it’s generally covered up with Google Chrome or Mac Mail.app. But if you do want nice desktop wallpapers, MacPaw Wallpaper Wizard does have some great photos in its library and it’s super simple to set up.
Download the app from https://macpaw.com/wallpaper-wizard – copy it to your Applications folder and run it. You’ll be asked to sign up, but you don’t appear to have to in order to use it. From there, you can simply follow the very easy instructions and choose the types of background you want shown. You can then add them to your wallpaper ‘roll’ which is basically the collection of wallpapers to cycle through. Click the ‘shuffle’ button to randomise the selection if you desire and that’s about it – done!
When you quit the application itself you’ll be asked if you want to keep the wallpaper wizard taskbar icon running, which you’ll need to do if you want it to keep changing at the preset interval. It also gives you a very handy convenient place to see what your current wallpaper is, change it if you desire and change the rotation interval.
That’s it, simple, elegant, easy.
